Fantastic
So, the crappy Home Depot ceiling lights in my parlor are... crappy. Also, because the windows in that room don't open (nor would I particularly want them to, since they are giant 1st-floor windows just above the public sidewalk), it would be nice to replace them with a couple of ceiling fans.
A caveat; the parlor is the room I am trying to keep most traditional in the house. So despite the fact that I am not ordinarily fond of fiddly metalwork or, for that matter, brass, I need something like the following contenders...

...in order of increasing wackiness, of course. I actually really like the third one, but I need at least one of them to have lights (preferably both) and I can't find a picture of that fan with a light on it.
I am ignoring the issue of cost, of course, because these are all ludicrously expensive, or at least way more than normal ceiling fans would be.
Thoughts?
For reference, here is a very crappy shot of one of the lights that are there now... can you say "on sale at the Home Depot?"

Here's a shot of the room, with one of those lights in the background:

And yes, that is Daphne (the cat I enjoy torturing) in the bread basket. Apparently I had not yet learned to take unblurry pictures at this point, or possibly, was already drunk.

I think the first one is the most elegant of the bunch. You need the lights, and you have the ceiling heighth to pull it off. The fourth and fifth fans are just wrong.
I also hate anything that just has a metal stalk hanging out of the ceiling if it isn't flush mounted.
Naturally, that's the most expensive one.
c'mon geek, paste a set of lights on that sucker.
Well that'd be all well and good, but I'd still have to find someone to sell me said lights...
You get to choose them, and they shouldn't be any trouble to install. What's the trouble?
I mean, aside from an extra project in the midst of remodeling.
Well, it's more that I don't know that they make any lights specifically FOR that model, and I'm guessing they'd look pretty stupid with lights on, anyway, because it'd totally ruin the ball shape.
Also, yeah, remodeling. Yeah. Sigh.
Fair enough. It looks great without lights.
Yeah, that's really my favorite one, but lights aren't really optional in that room. Of course, this and every other decision I've made recently is fraught with unwelcome compromise; I'd like to be able to get whatever I want, but it's stupid to spend $2000 on something that won't noticeably improve my house's saleability if I'm not going to live here for 10 more years. That said, you can see what happens when someone spends $60...
Taste weighs heavy in that compromise.
Your house is big enough to lash out in a room or two (read: see last two fans), but yeah, saleability is an issue.
I figure I'll leave the parlor more or less trad-looking, make the third floor vastly more modern, and something in between on the 2nd floor. Fuck the basement.
Yes. Fuck the basement.
Of course, it would be nice to rent it... you wanna come build me a floor?
Your lighting post again gives me fixture envy. Looked for a knockoff eurofase astree for ages (did you get it in the end?) but had a hard time justifying a light that costs more than the mortgage (I liked the amber rather than the clear) for a house I don't expect to live in forever.
Where do you find these things? There is a lot of seriously ugly lighting in this world.
shelley: ditto; the Astree is going to have to wait for a house I plan to stay in for a while (see discussion on compromises, above).
Most of these I found by typing "ceiling fan traditional" in Google. And yes, yes there is.
I'm not fond of traditional design, but of the choices, I like #1.
My house came with horrid ceiling fan light fixtures, but I have yet to replace them b/c I probably can't afford what I really want so why bother. I just don't look up. :)
Yeah, unfortunately, in this case, there are no fans, so I have to replace the lights.
The first one costs $1028.
Um. Really? No. Sitting here at my desk job, though, I seriously considered it if only for about 3.2 seconds.
I wonder how my/your old floor is doing.
Well, the house is still there...
I sometimes use your impressive achievement in getting that room done as motivation to get me to do a single goddamned thing around the house... it usually doesn't work, though.
Keep in mind that I was very mildly employed at the time. That's so key. Finishing that room took a lot of f'ing work, and there's no way I could have done it with the job I have now.
Well, that's not helpful!
Broadsheet: wait, how are you supposed to hang a non-flush fan without a metal stalk?
Hey, man. I don't need you saddling me with any 'impressive achievements' that I might have to live up to later.
Just lowering the bar here.
No one said you had to be impressive AGAIN...
HOLY SHIT WHEN'D YOU DO ALL THIS UPDATING? (I mean to the blog).
also: that parlor looks awesome compared to the time I saw it. I still say you should put a pool table in.
pretty much just the other day... it just LOOKS like a lot of content, it really isn't.
That last picture is from 2004 or so; it's completely empty right now. And yeah, I want a pool table in it, too.
I actually like #3 from a fits the age of the house standpoint but, um... it has no lights on it...
Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose?
Item #2: Call me when you get something and we can talk about when I am going to connect it for you - for lots of expensive beer...
Item #3: Wow those last who are freak-tacular! Who in their right mind would install those? Also... what was the manufacturer thinking?
Wow.
