Hit 'em Where It Hurts
So I just switched my electric generation and transmission from BG&E to Washington Gas & Electric; while BG&E will still get my delivery dollars (can you say "monopoly" boys & girls?) I will be saving a quoted 12% on BG&E's summer rates, and 3% on their winter rates.
As an added bonus, 5% of WGES' power is wind-generated, so I can check that off on my Good Liberal punchcard.
Sadly, this will not affect my gas prices, which represent up to 80% of my winter bill, but BG&E is apparently not planning to raise those by 120% next month, which is just as well, since they've already effectively doubled them since I bought the house.
I don't harbor any illusions that this will make one damned difference to BG&E's plans to fuck us all and expose us to outages in Florida we've never been exposed to before, but since they argue that their new rates are at "market price" and WGES is obviously capable of beating those rates, I figure, why not let the market decide?
In short, instead of signing on to BG&E's bullshit "gradual increase" that's currently stalled in the courts, change providers. We'll see how many people need to switch before BG&E suddenly decides that they CAN afford to charge less, after all.
